Pixar has delivered numerous high-quality animated films that have stood the test of time. However, there are some Pixar movies that deserve more recognition. One of those films is A Bug’s Life (1998), a criminally underrated project from director John Lasseter. It is available on Disney+ Hotstar.
A Bug’s Life focuses on Flik, an ant who is considered a brave but clumsy inventor. He decides to recruit circus bugs to protect his colony from greedy and horrible grasshoppers, led by Hopper. Initially, Flik’s inventions give birth to all sorts of troubles, but with teamwork, he manages to defeat Hopper and his grasshoppers. This feat makes the ants realise the significance of unity.
One of the things that makes A Bug’s Life a severely underrated film is its theatrical release window. The film got sandwiched between Toy Story and Toy Story 2. In addition, Pixar was not as prominent as it is today when the film arrived in the theatres. Moreover, the studio did not have enough faith in it, which is why they did not promote it aggressively.
However, A Bug’s Life benefits from an amazing voice cast, innovative story, Lasseter’s confident direction, memorable characters, and witty dialogues. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a strong ‘fresh’ score of 92%, based on over 90 reviews. It stars Dave Foley, Kevin Spacey, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Hayden Panettiere. Stream it now on Disney+ Hotstar.
