No one can write a horror novel better than Stephen King. Period! The legendary author has written over 20 spine-chilling and sensational horror novels, establishing him as “the King of Horror”. He has authored some of the most popular horror novels of all time, Carrie (1974), Salem’s Lot (1975), The Shining (1977), Pet Sematary (1983), It (1986), Gerald’s Game (1992), Dreamcatcher (2001), and more. He also wrote The Mist (1980). And its official film adaptation arrived in theatres in 2007, helmed by Frank Darabont.
The Mist revolves around a group trapped inside a supermarket after an unnatural mist covers their town, concealing deadly Lovecraftian monsters. As paranoia and fear grow, the people inside the supermarket struggle to survive the mysterious threats outside and their internal conflicts. Darabont changed the film’s ending from King’s novella, which led to a controversial but highly impactful climax.
Although, people’s opinion about the film has become more positive in recent years. Darabont expertly maintains a petrifying and claustrophobic atmosphere throughout the film. The visuals and the camerawork are impressive too. In addition, the cast, including Thomas Jane, Laurie Holden, and Marcia Gay Harden, does a brilliant job. Darabont perfectly shows how people react to extreme situations; his exploration of human psychology looks impressive.
The Mist has a ‘fresh’ score of 71% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 147 reviews.
Directed by Frank Darabont, The Mist is available on Netflix. Enjoy!
