Shrek! After all these years, it is safe to say that this Mike Myers starrer has stood the test of time. More than 22 years have passed since its theatrical release, yet it has the charm and the heart to entertain viewers of all ages.
The 2001 animated beauty from DreamWorks revolves around a grumpy ogre, Shrek, who likes living alone in his swamp. His peaceful life gets interrupted after Lord Farquaad of Duloc exiles a large number of fairy-tale creatures, who surprisingly end up in his swamp. This angers Shrek and forces him to drop a visit to Farquaad to confront him. One of the exiled creatures, Donkey, also partners with Shrek (who does not like Donkey initially) on his journey to Duloc. Farquaad promises Shrek to relocate all the creatures in exchange for saving Princess Fiona from the Dragon. During his journey, he starts developing feelings for Fiona after saving her. Ultimately, we see Shrek realising the true meaning of friendship and love.
Shrek was largely praised for its humour, animation style, voice performances, and visuals. Critics particularly praised Eddie Murphy’s voice role as Donkey. The rest of the cast, including Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, John Lithgow, and more, did an amazing job too. The musical score provided by John Powell and Harry Gregson-Williams helps give viewers a memorable watching experience.
The film has a critic score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 211 reviews. It earned over $490 million globally against its $60 million budget during its theatrical run.
Shrek (2001) is currently streaming on Prime Video. Enjoy!
