Amazon Prime Video will drop the teaser trailer for the upcoming, highly anticipated Malayalam movie – Drishyam 2 on the 8th of February. We should (hopefully) get the release date for the movie along with the trailer and we will finally be able to confirm if the movie will release on the 15th of February 2021, as mentioned previously by film producer Antony Perumbavoor. But after everything is said and done – is Drishyam 2 supposed to be a proper follow-up? Or is it just a quick cash grab opportunity for the producers and actors?
Drishyam when released back in 2013, was the biggest Mollywood box office of all time. It has now been broken, but the fact remains that it was at the top of the Malayalam movie box office chart and was there for a long time. It went on to be remade in four Indian languages – Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Telugu as well as in two international languages – in Sinhalese and in Chinese, making Drishyam the first Indian movie to be remade for the Chinese audience
All of these (mostly well known) facts are being mentioned here so as to give you guys an idea about the impact of this Malayalam film. Drishyam challenged the norms and created a specific genre called family mystery thriller, which as the name suggests, was an engaging, mystery thriller of a film which can be watched by anyone, but targeted at families (A major chunk of the Malayali audience at the time). At a time when we expected no thriller could surprise us, Drishyam came from behind and knocked our socks off. So for a movie like that to have a sequel, the second part will have a lot of high expectations to meet.
One thing pointing towards a (hopefully) proper follow-up is the return of Drishyam’s writer and director Jeethu Joseph for the sequel. That inspires confidence for us all and the return of the entire cast doesn’t hurt either. This film was apparently a few years in the making as well and it might have been a part of Jeethu Joseph’s main story when he was making the original masterpiece. For now, we will have to wait and see till the movie drops on Amazon Prime Video.
