The post production of the sequel to the Malayalam family thriller Drishyam, titled Drishyam 2, was wrapped up yesterday. The highly anticipated Mohanlal starrer will release on Amazon Prime Video in the middle of February, at the end of the second; at least according to the film producer, Antony Perumbavoor. Drishyam 2 film director Jeethu Joseph, took to social media to post some pictures from his editing studio, which was captioned, “Drishyam 2 completed the post work and ready for release”.
But why is Drishyam 2 releasing on 15th February 2021, on a Monday? If the film was meant for a Valentine’s Day release, then why is it not releasing 14th February morning or on 13th February in the evening? This Sunday/ Monday release date is quite new for Amazon Prime Video and we expect a change in release schedule because of this reason.
This quick release has also hit many by surprise. The film completed post production on 3rd and it will be released on 15th of Feb? That’s quite fast, especially for a film which has had very low publicity so far and has only dropped a very ambiguous teaser trailer. We found the reason behind the quick release of Drishyam 2 however, and it is because of the aforementioned movie producer, Antony Perumbavoor.
Antony Perumbavoor is producing two Mohanlal starring, expected-hit films, Drishyam 2 and the upcoming Malayalam historical war film Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea. Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea has already got a release date (in March) and Perumbavoor does not want both films to clash – be it in theaters or on any screens. Which makes sense, because if both films are released during the same time, they will have to compete with each other (even if one is on OTT) for the favour of the audience, which is a lose-lose situation for the producer. And releasing Drishyam 2 later could cause the hype behind the film to die down as well. So Perumbavoor is doing the smart thing and capitalizing on Drishyam 2’s popularity and releasing the movie early. Most theater owners will not be complaining about Drishyam 2’s lack of availability in cinemas either since Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea is expected to drop very quickly, during next month.
With Kerala currently reporting extremely high Covid numbers since the virus came to India, the state has put up multiple restrictions on its citizens; just short of a complete lockdown. With these issues going on, many Keralites would prefer to watch Drishyam 2 from the comfort of their homes and not risk the coronavirus. The early OTT release was actually just good foresight from the production house’s part, in this case.
Drishyam 2 will be released on Amazon Prime Video on 15th February 2021 as per the official statement from the producer. Which means it could be 14th, Sunday night as well.
