The blockbuster Hindi language remake of ‘Drishyam 2’ turned out to be one of the best reviewed Hindi films of 2022 – courtesy the terrific source material, lead performances and adept direction. Besides the Hindi remakes, the parent Malayalam film ‘Drishyam’ was also remade in other Indian languages namely Kannada, Telugu, and Tamil.
And now, the immensely popular ‘Drishyam’ film franchise is going global as Panorama Studios International has acquired the remake rights for the parent Malayalam films ‘Drishyam 1’ and ‘Drishyam 2’ in all non-Indian languages including English and Chinese languages but excluding Filipino, Sinhala, and Indonesian languages. Negotiations for ‘Drishyam’ remakes are underway to be made in Korea, Japan, and Hollywood.
As per the usual trend until now, we have witnessed umpteen number of Hollywood and other foreign language movies getting remade in Indian languages. But the other way round, that is, Indian films getting remade in foreign countries and languages, is almost unheard of.
Some of the rare Indian films which were remade in Hollywood include Neeraj Pandey’s gripping thriller ‘A Wednesday’ (2008). The film was officially remade in English language and the title was ‘A Common Man’ (2013). The role played by Naseeruddin Shah in the original movie was essayed by ‘Gandhi’ actor Ben Kingsley in the English remake.
Further, R. Madhavan’s criminally underrated psychological horror movie ‘13B’ was also in talks to be remade in Hollywood. An American studio had shown keen interest in the remake, but the project didn’t move forward for some reason.
Coming back to the parent Malayalam language ‘Drishyam’ films helmed by Jeethu Joseph, their story revolves around Georgekutty (Mohanlal) and his simple and middle-class family. After an unfortunate incident, the family becomes the prime suspect in a missing person and suspected murder case of a senior cop’s son. How the protagonist uses his brains to deal with the situation in order to protect his family, forms the films’ basic plot.
