After rocking remakes in seven different languages, the terrific Drishyam franchise is now going to Hollywood. Production house Panorama Studios has tied up with Hollywood film production companies Gulfstream Pictures and JOAT Films to remake Drishyam in English for western audiences. Drishyam will thus become the first Indian film to get an official Hollywood remake.
Gulfstream Pictures has recently produced the Prime Video original film ‘Upgraded’, with Camila Mendes in the lead. It has also produced other popular films such as Blended, The Other Zoey, Nut Job, Mother’s Day, among others.
Producers Kumar Mangat Pathak and Abhishek Pathak of Panorama Studios are the owners of the international remake rights for Drishyam & Drishyam 2, which they bought from the original producers, Aashirvad Cinemas. The original Malayalam film ‘Drishyam’ was written and directed by Jeethu Joseph, and became an instant hit. The Mohanlal starrer spawned several remakes – in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Sri Lankan as well as Chinese, all of which were hits.
The intelligent plot of Drishyam, coupled with the edge of the seat suspense in the movie, lends itself well to filmmaking in any language and culture. Besides the Hollywood version, Panorama Studios also has a Korean remake for Drishyam on the anvil with Anthology Studios. Talks are also on for a Spanish language version of Drishyam.
