We are in the second decade of the 21st century. 2021 will officially mark the 3rd decade, as time is going by we are seeing an increase in the content released each week and each month. With an increasing number of movies, series, shows, documentaries our free times are easily being passed and the culture of “binge watching” has erupted. With newer content, better OTT platforms, people look forward happily and excitedly towards those.
Now, in comes the year 2020. Who would have thought that this year would change the game altogether? Things changed at the blink of the eye and we were stuck at home for months. As this happened, people started looking into more online content and the OTT business boomed like no other. More and more shows were coming in, films started the trend of direct to OTT, so that the fans didn’t have to wait for theatres.
With the growing popularity, the OTT sites started to reach places where even the languages the popular shows were shown in wasn’t known or probably less used. This brought up the idea of dubbing, into the game. Being from the generation when South Indian and English movies were dubbed into Hindi and shown on TV, we know how cringe worthy those were.
But this seems like things are changing for good now. Skeptical of what dubbing would look like or more precisely sound like we might not watch that particular movies or series in the regional, but this dubbing of the content is doing a great deal of help for those who are now getting into the OTT shows and series. With the recent hits like Boys S2, Aarya, Scam 1992, Sex Education and others being released in regional languages it will end up attracting more and more
The added benefit here is that, OTTs are pulling in big league actors which tends to attract more people. The actors doing the dubbing, proper hindi or South Indian languages being used, the not-so-cringey stuff is attracting more and more viewers.
The OTT Giants appreciating the Indian diversity seems to be working in favor for them as more and more people are being pulled towards these.
