Last week, Dulquer Salman released 5 posters for his “upcoming” feature film, ‘Kurup‘ on Instagram – each poster having the same title in various regional languages. The lead actor who is also producing the film, through his production company, Wayfarer Films, announced on the online post that his movie will be coming out soon, much to the relief of many fans. However, this announcement along with the various rumours that have been circulating about the film seems to indicate that we are looking at another high-profile Mollywood entry for the “direct-to-OTT releases list”.

Kurup has been postponed (for the “100th” time in May) because of the rise in coronavirus cases in Kerala due to the second Covid-19 wave. This eventually made the State government shut down all public spaces – including theatres (by April end) and by the first week of May, Kerala was under lockdown for weeks now (theatres have remained closed for over 3 months and counting). While things have started improving now, it won’t be long before the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic hits us.
With the film being postponed for over a year and the production company haemorrhaging money, a direct-to-OTT release is the best option for the film currently. We are disappointed that we will not see the movie in theatres, but it is still a better option than not being able to see the movie at all or by this year at the very least. And that seems to be the case with this upcoming aforementioned third wave of coronavirus. This new wave will apparently hit a peak of a minimum of 1 lakh cases per day (in India) by October, which means that Kerala theatres will open up anytime soon.
Add to the fact that the State is also under flood alert for the next couple of months, we are looking at theatres remaining closed till 2022, with the way things are going. Of course, 2022 is a stretch – then again we didn’t think that our prediction of Kerala theatres remaining closed beyond August (which we did by May end) would actually come true. For now, we will have to wait and see regarding the Kerala theatre issue. However, we expect to see/ or hear about a direct-to-OTT release for ‘Kurup’ in the coming weeks.
