“Dune’s latest installment can definitely be compared to a festive season, and like most countdowns, when the clock hits zero, Dune manages to deliver. The film was expected to gross $80M, and though the number looked astronomical at the beginning, Dune 2 managed to exceed it.
As of the opening weekend, it earned $12M through previews, quite a big number, and stands in the top 6 for the biggest previews, but as it shows, the sky’s the limit for the Timothée Chalamet film.
During the weekend, just in the USA domestic market, the film grossed $81.5M and managed to be the biggest opening of the year. But the major success comes from the international market, managing to gross the $97M mark.
Previously, the first installment of Dune managed to fumble, but adapting a dual streaming strategy, theater and HBO, caused a bit of a clash, but the international market also came out strong, even back then.
As Dune manages to exceed its previous parts’ quality and grandeur, the audience also showed the film major love and appreciation.
Dune 2 banks on international ticket sales for financial success, despite a warm reception in the U.S. and Canada. With a $190 million production budget and $100 million in promotional expenses, the film must perform well globally to break even.
Premium formats like IMAX have played a pivotal role, representing 48% of initial revenue, signaling a hopeful beginning for its box office journey.
