Early Reviews Claim Sai Pallavi’s ‘Gargi’ as This Year’s ‘Jai Bhim’!

Early Reviews Claim Sai Pallavi’s ‘Gargi’ as This Year’s ‘Jai Bhim’!

In what seems like a ray of hope for Actress Sai Pallavi, her latest Tamil film ‘Gargi‘ is being hailed as a 5 star film post press previews. Early reviewers claim the film to be one of the best tamil films ever in last few years. Not only that, multiple reviews claim ‘Gargi’ to be the ‘Jai Bhim’ of this year. The film releases today, i.e on 15th July.

If early reactions are to go by, finally Sai Pallavi’s efforts are coming to fruition. The actress has been having a rocky phase at the Box-office after Sekhar Kammula’s Love Story. Although Shyam Singha Roy was still a commercial success, it didn’t get the commercial reception it deserved. Her last release ‘Virata Parvam’ was a colossal disaster at the theatres and not very well recieved on Netflix either. Gargi’s early critical acclaim comes at a point when the actress needed it the most. Not just for the star she is, but also for the performer she is and has consistently been. Critics have praised Gargi to be the most Important Tamil film in years and Sai Pallavi’s performance, her best ever.

Some of the early reactions from ‘Gargi’ press preview :

In this Intense fusion of whodunnit and courtroom drama, Sai Pallavi is a dutiful daughter who fights for her father. She essays the role of a teacher in the movie with a loving family. Her life turns upside down when her father who works as a watchman is arrested in a fake sexual assault case of a minor. She goes to lengths to deliver justice to her father and this forms the crux of the case.

Most of the reactions call the film ‘gut-wrenching’, ‘hard-hitting’, ‘heart-breaking’, ‘realistic’ and even a film that would have been a guaranteed box office hit pre-covid times. Theatre going audience sensibilities have rapidly changed post covid. Only big ticket films have been working at the movies and smaller films are either going un-noticed Or getting crushed off-late. But this level of unanimous positive reception hints at a gleaming ray of hope for Gargi. The tough knit court-room drama that also is part whodunnit. This could be the reason why reviewers have tagged ‘Gargi’ as this year’s Jai Bhim. For the unversed, Jai Bhim was probably the biggest streaming hit from India last year. The film not only broke viewership records on Amazon Prime India but also stands at a record 8.9 IMDB rating. Several year end lists called it the Best Indian Film of 2021. The Suriya starrer, directed by T J Gnanavel was also produced by Suriya and Jyothika’s 2D Entertainment. Quite coincidentally ‘Gargi’ is also being presented by Suriya and Jyothika’s 2D Entertainment in Tamil Language.

The parallels between both the films are uncanny and they just do not end here. Both the films are inherently courtroom dramas. Gargi’s critical reception is as unanimously positive as Jai Bhim! Critics are calling the film as hard-hitting as Jai Bhim. Now the road ahead for Gargi is the box-office performance. Not to infer that a film’s quality is directly proportional to it’s commercial returns, but the actress and the entire team of Gargi deserves commercial revenues too. Had Gargi been a digital release like Jai Bhim, friday litmus test would have held no meat. Since Gargi is hitting the theatres, it needs to pass the friday litmus test. People really need to get out of their lazy couches and give the film a chance. Unlike Jai Bhim, Gargi needs box-office returns to recover its distribution rights.

Gargi is directed by Gautham Ramachandran and bank-rolled by Ravichandran Ramachandran, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Thomas George, and Gautham Ramachandran under the banner Blacky Genie & My Left Foot Productions. Gargi stars Sai Pallavi in lead and Kali Venkat in a pivotal role. Music Director Govind Vasantha has composed music. The Film releases today in Kannada, Telugu and Malayalam. Stay tuned for more updates.
