Marvel has dropped its latest Disney+ series, Echo, starring Alaqua Cox as the titular character. All five episodes are now available to watch on the streaming platform. Despite gaining spectacular first reactions, Echo fails to live up to the hype, thanks to Rotten Tomatoes.
Echo has managed to bag a ‘fresh’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, 73%, based on 40 reviews. We know this value will fluctuate. But considering everything about the show, only a miracle can take the show’s RT score above 90%.
Most of the recent MCU projects failed to perform well after receiving fantastic initial responses from critics. A similar case occurred with Secret Invasion as well. Many declared the Samuel J. Jackson starrer a thrilling and fun entry to the MCU. However, it was a complete mess right from the get-go. The series’ horrible statistics left a sour taste in many viewers’ mouths. This scenario forces Echo to necessarily perform well (critically and viewership-wise) to justify its existence and addition to the MCU.
Another thing that does not favour Echo is the lack of big selling points. Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin is the only popular actor with a full-fledged role in the latest Disney+ series. Charlie Cox has a limited role as Daredevil in the show. Marvel did not extensively promote his inclusion in the series to treat him more like a surprise package. In addition, the leading lady, Alaqua Cox, and her on-screen character are not globally prominent and powerful enough to lure a significant number of viewers towards the show.
Alaqua Cox’s performance as Echo has received critical acclaim. In addition, critics have praised the series’ action sequences, physically intense fight scenes, and the rest of the cast’s performance. However, it also received criticism for its storyline. In addition, it suffers from poor editing and pacing issues.
This type of mediocre critical response will surely make things difficult for the upcoming Marvel shows, like Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, Eyes of Wakanda, Ironheart, Marvel Zombies, and more. Stream Echo now on Disney+ Hotstar. Stay tuned for more updates.
