Eddie Murphy has revealed how “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” will be different from the third movie (1994). His upcoming Netflix movie marks his return as the popular street-smart cop from Detriot, Axel Foley, after 30 long years. In the fourth film, we will see Foley returning to Beverly Hills and teaming up with his old pals, Billy Rosewood and John Taggart, again to save his daughter, Jane. Along the way, he will uncover a dangerous conspiracy.
Talking with Seth Meyers on the popular talk show, “Late Night with Seth Meyers”, Murphy teased his forthcoming film’s intriguing villain, Kevin Bacon. The actor hailed Bacon as “the perfect villain.” He blames the last movie’s weak villain for its shortcomings. Murphy believes Kevin Bacon’s addition will make ‘Axel F’ truly amazing. This is what he said:
“He is the perfect villain. One of the things that makes Beverly Hills Cop work is the first two Beverly Hills Cops are really good, and the third one is a little soft. And it’s because we didn’t have a great villain. And now you’ve got this great villain in Kevin Bacon. I don’t know what it is about leading men who do villain roles, he’s got this great, great villain.”
Beverly Hills Cop 3 was a commercial and critical disaster. It managed to earn only $119 globally against a heavy budget of $70 million. Plus, it has a “rotten” score of 11% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 56 certified reviews, making it the lowest-rated entry in the franchise. Apart from not having a great villain, the third movie relied too heavily on its slapstick humour. Moreover, the leading man’s portrayal of Axel Foley was not received favourably by audiences.
“Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on July 3. It stars Eddie Murphy, Kevin Bacon, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Taylour Paige, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser, and Bronson Pinchot. Stay tuned for more updates.
