Ekta Kapoor and her mother, Shobha Kapoor, have stepped down as the heads of ALTBalaji. The television producer announced her exit from the OTT platform via Instagram on Friday morning. As a result, Vivek Koka has been chosen to lead the streaming service as the new Chief Business Officer.
Kapoor revealed that the process of her exit started last year and the decision was ‘strategic’, allowing her to focus on new ventures. She even added a caption to her post: “Good luck team alt! Will always share your posts and lend any support needed. Let’s welcome the new management.”

It will be intriguing to see how the new management functions under Koka’s leadership. Will he serve as Kapoor’s right-hand man? Or will he finally bring some much-needed changes to the OTT service?
The competition among the Indian OTT platforms has become stiffer than ever. With so many active competitors, it has become a great challenge for all streaming services to ensure their survival in the Indian market. Long gone are those days when serving adult content was enough to secure a handsome viewership. Times have changed, and so have Indian viewers. Now, the majority of them want top-quality products with new and innovative storylines.
ALTBalaji delivered only one new show last year. Yup, we are talking about Kangana Ranuat’s Lock Upp. That reality series turned out to be one of the worst Indian shows ever in terms of quality and execution. It served as nothing but a cheap replica of Colors’ Bigg Boss. The show heavily relied on controversial drama and verbal fights. But the thing that pissed off many viewers was Ranaut’s manner of interaction with the contestants. The actor often besmirched the contestants just to get some cheap hype for the show.
The future of ALTBalaji looks dim. Vivek Koka must not follow in the footsteps of Ekta Kapoor. He has a fantastic opportunity to finally do something good for the streaming service rather than serving as a puppeteer for the Indian Daily Soap Queen. The newly appointed Chief Business Officer must focus on dropping new and quality shows. Let’s see how his reign goes. Stay tuned for more updates.
