The 73rd Emmy Awards have proved beyond doubt what everyone has known since long – streaming platforms are the present and the future of entertainment across the world. Broadcast TV has proven to be the laggard when it comes to grabbing awards at prominent awards shows.
Emmys 2021 has been particularly one-sided in the numbers game. Netflix has broken all records in Emmy wins for streaming platforms – it has grabbed 44 Emmy Awards this year, equalling the record for most Emmy wins by a single platform in a year. The record, set by CBS in 1974, has never been broken uptil now. Netflix has equalled the record this year, after 47 years of no platform managing to do it. HBO & HBO Max combined is a distant second, with 19 Emmy wins.
This year, all three best series awards – have been bagged by streamers – a first for the Emmys. Netflix’s ‘The Crown’ and ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ won the Best Drama series and Best Limited Series Emmys respectively. Apple TV Plus’ ‘Ted Lasso’ won the Best Comedy Series Emmy.
In a sad precedent for the Emmys, all the Emmy Awards in the performance categories, best actors, actresses, as well as supporting actors and actresses, were won by white actors. However, Michaela Coel made history as the first Black woman to win an Emmy for limited series writing. It is her first Emmy win, for “I May Destroy You.”
