Leigh Whannell’s cyberpunk action movie, Upgrade (2018), is undoubtedly one of the most underrated action flicks that have come out in recent years. The film deserves more recognition than it has received. We advise you not to judge it based on its box office collection. It is currently streaming on Netflix.
Upgrade revolves around Grey Trace, an auto-mechanic and husband of Asha, who works for Cobalt, one of the leading contributors towards the development of human-computer augmentations. During a car drive, Grey and Asha’s self-driving car starts malfunctioning and later crashes seriously. Out of nowhere, a group of men arrive at the scene. They murder Asha and shoot Grey in the neck, resulting in his paralysis. After some time, he meets with Eron, who inspires him for STEM implantation. In the film, STEM is an AI chip, which gets implanted inside Grey’s body. STEM aids Grey in learning how to walk again and later, look for his wife’s murderers.
As Grey starts taking revenge, STEM starts to gradually take control of Grey, transforming him into a dangerous weapon. All hell breaks loose after STEM reveals its true intentions.
Leigh Whannell does a brilliant job in the direction and the writing department. His story is filled with enough twists and turns that keep us hooked to our screens. Logan Marshall-Green as Grey delivers a committed and solid performance. But the thing that stands out the most in this flick is the fight sequences. They are brutal and well-choreographed. Overall, Upgrade is a must-watch!
Upgrade has a ‘fresh’ score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes based on over 190 reviews. It is available on Netflix. Apart from Logan Marshall-Green, the film stars Betty Gabriel and Harrison Gilbertson. Watch it now!
