Netflix has dropped an intriguing first look of its upcoming Swedish Original series ‘The Unlikely Murderer’. Based on the eponymous award-winning book from 2018 written by Thomas Pettersson, ‘The Unlikely Murderer’ will launch soon, only on Netflix.
A minute long video released by the global streaming giant, begins with black screen on which date and time is mentioned as February 28, 1986 at 11:21 PM and two gunshot sounds are heard in the background. As the black screen goes away there is a spectacled man with a trembling breath holding a gun in his hand.
A body oozing blood is seen lying on the snow covered ground while a woman standing there screams in shock and fear. Turns out the man shot was Sweden’s Prime Minister Olof Palme who was shot dead in the middle of a street.
The murder is witnessed by people who see the killer running away and in a matter of moments one of them informs the police as others approach the crime scene for help.
‘The Unlikely Murderer’, a Swedish drama series is a fictional interpretation of how Stig Engström, the graphic designer who was named as the probable murderer of Sweden’s prime minister Olof Palme, managed to elude justice right up to his death through a combination of audacity, luck and a perplexed police force. What do we know about Stig Engström? How could the police let him get away, despite being on his track? The murder was not planned well, Engström did everything wrong from the beginning and almost no one believed his lies about what he actually did during that fateful night 1986 in Stockholm, Sweden.
The series stars Robert Gustafsson, Eva Melander, Mikael Persbrandt and Peter Andersson in prominent roles. They are joined by Joel Spira, Emil Almén, Shanti Roney, Torkel Petterson, Henrik Norlén, Lia Boysen, Magnus Krepper, Björn Bengtsson, Peter Viitanen and Cilla Thorell.
Wilhelm Behrman and Niklas Rockström (Caliphate, Before we Die) are the scriptwriter for ‘The Unlikely Murderer’ with Charlotte Brändström (The Witcher, Jupiter’s Legacy, The Lord of the Rings) serving as its conceptual director and Simon Kaijser (Don’t Ever Wipe Tears Without Gloves, Before we Die, Spinning Man) as the director for the series. The series is produced by Fatima Varhos and Frida Asp for FLX. Pontus Edgren of FLX is the executive producer.
