From your favorite series to ordering biryani from your favorite place, if you do the same thing over and over again, it gets stale, it starts to get monotonous, and then you start to hate it. In terms of food, there might be a week-long limit, but what’s the limit in terms of a series?
Technically, in terms of series, there is no specific sweet spot, but in general, a good 4-5 seasons can give you comfort. From Mr. Robot to Succession, all exist within that sweet spot, and some extend the barrier and still excel. Now, that was completely my opinion. In terms of the experts, there is one man who also has an ideal length for a series, but that might change soon.
Eric Kripke, throughout the years, has been a part of some really appreciated series, such as Supernatural and Revolution. Now, in his previous experience with Supernatural, he marked a sweet five-season journey.
In a recent interview, Kripke acknowledged his struggle to gauge a show’s longevity. This originates from his departure as Supernatural’s showrunner after season 5, while the series ran for 10 more seasons. Given this, and Gen V’s early success, Kripke is now reevaluating his initial five-year plan for The Boys.
In the interview, he states, ‘I have since realized that literally no one in history is worse at predicting the number of seasons for a show, like literally. I have learned my lesson and I’ve stopped predicting how many seasons these shows will go. You will find out in hindsight.’
As of now, the three seasons of the show have been spot on. And now with the introduction of Gen V, the entire storyline will indeed have a faster pace. Obviously, it won’t be as long as Supernatural, but if the quality is maintained, the makers can put up a long fight.
The recent strike also messes up the entire timeline, and as studios are trying to redeem themselves, the future looks a hazy one but certain. The probable time is obviously at the end of this year, but again, it’s very uncertain to believe that deadline.
