We all know that Margot Robbie and Adam Driver are no longer in talks for their MCU debut in Matt Shakman’s upcoming Fantastic Four film. The highly anticipated superhero project has been the talk of the town forever. It will commence MCU’s Phase Six, and is scheduled to arrive in theatres in May 2025. However, the film has no actors. And Marvel fans are worried about this scenario. David Corenswet has already been cast as the “Last Son of Krypton” in James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy, which will also come out in 2025. It means that the time has come for Marvel to finalize the cast of the upcoming FF project as well.
Though, getting a good cast for Fantastic Four will not be enough for Marvel. The film’s survival at the box office depends heavily on its storyline.
Previous Fantastic Four flicks had talented actors but failed in terms of critical reception and box office collection. They proved why a film must have a good storyline.
Marvel Studios have an outstanding record of bestowing films with strong scripts, probably one of the reasons why high-profile actors like Ben Kingsley, Robert Redford, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Downey Jr, and more, have worked in MCU projects.
Numerous superhero projects have suffered the wrath of fans due to their poor storylines, despite having supremely talented actors. For instance, Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever (1995) is considered one of the worst superhero movies ever. The film could have taken the entire superhero genre to new heights. It even had the likes of Jim Carrey (Riddler) and Tommy Lee Jones (Two-Face). But it ended up being nothing except one hell of a joke.
The Fantastic Four have always struggled when it comes to stand out from the rest of Marvel’s superheroes. The superhero faction is prominent in the world of comics, largely due to the strengths of their unique personas and the wildly creative nature of their adventures. However, the scenario changes dramatically when it comes to their adaptation in films. The two FF flicks from the 2000s had Tim Story as their helmer and treasured a fantastic cast. But neither one of them had intriguing storylines and characters arcs. And it is best not to talk about the disastrous Josh Trank’s FF film (2015).
The formula of casting big names in films doesn’t work unless the latter have good storylines. Warner Bros must have learned this lesson after the release of Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam.
Directed by Matt Shakman, MCU’s Fantastic Four will come out on May 2, 2025. Stay tuned for more updates.
