Shareholder meetings of the company, as the name suggests, are usually of interest only to company shareholders where an update on company related activities is provided. However, Disney is not just another company. Amongst its other businesses, the House of Mouse has some of the most popular franchises such as Walt Disney, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilms, Pixar and more. It runs the streaming service Disney+.
It attracts the interest of millions of cinephiles and audiences who expect the company to release trailers of upcoming movies or tv shows, new announcement of shows, production update and release dates of previously announced shows. Every word mentioned by Disney executives is closely heard. So, what went down at the 2022 Disney Shareholders meet. Here are the highlights of everything related to Movies and TV:
Encanto Franchise
Given the huge success of Encanto, an animated musical which released last year, a sequel was always a question of when rather than if. This was further validated by Disney CEO Bob Chapek. Chapek referred to Encanto as “Disney’s newest franchise”, which meant that the movie is surely not being restricted to a standalone movie. Days ago, composer Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote songs for the movie, expressed his desire to explore a sequel or a spin-off to Encanto. This will get him and Encanto fans excited.
Ms Marvel and She-Hulk
Chapek again confirmed previously reported news that Ms Marvel would be the next Marvel Studios Disney+ release (of course after Moon Knight which premieres on March 30) with She-Hulk releasing later. However, there was disappointment in store as no release date was announced for these projects. It was just mentioned that these shows will come out “later this year”.
Pinocchio and Obi Wan
Among the biggest announcements of the night, a first look of Pinnochio and a trailer for the upcoming Star Wars spin-off series Obi Wan Kenobi was released. A first look image of Tom Hanks as Geppetto and Pinocchio voiced by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth was released. A trailer featuring Ewan McGregor reprising his role as Obi-Wan was the biggest reveal of the night.
Apart from this, Bob Chapek made a comment about the Dr Strange sequel saying the movie “pushes the boundary of storytelling” and “connects pieces of MCU in unexpected way”.
This wraps up most of the highlights of everything said about movies and TV shows at the meet. However, it continues to leave fans wanting more.
