For the unversed, Netflix organises a Geeked Week every year where they announce new titles, and renew existing shows. Overall, they are nothing less than a festival for cinephiles.
On May 26th itself, Netflix unveiled the schedule for all the titles they would be talking about in the Geeked Week. We were waiting for surprises but alas there ain’t any.
But a few things need to be discussed.
Why is there no inclusion of Indian content in the Geeked Week?
On 6th June they worked on many series and on 7th June, it was the chance for films.
But yesterday itself, Netflix India announced the glimpse of Jaadugar (film) starring Jitendra Kumar.
Today, they came up with the trailer of She Season 2 which is a famous series by the platform.
The question here is, Netflix Geeked Week exists to announce new titles or renewing the old ones. If ‘Jaadugar’ was to be announced yesterday only and ‘She Season 2‘ trailer was to drop today then why weren’t they included in the Geeked Week?
After all, it could give the film global exposure!
Also, Indian films seem to be working out internationally. Thanks to Gangubai Kathiawadi and RRR which is getting greatly celebrated on Netflix all over the world.
Does Netflix consider Indian content too substandard to provide it with a global platform?
If yes, then why aren’t they solving the problem by making better content?
If no, then isn’t it a reflection of bias or let’s say xenophobia against Indian content?
Netflix India onboarded a superstar as prominent as Madhuri Dixit but the official Twitter handle of Netflix never promoted it. The only time Netflix posted a dedicated tweet for an Indian film was in the case of RRR which came after completing a glorious theatrical run globally.
When Korean and European content is getting included in the Geeked Week then why isn’t any Indian title finding a way?
And then Reed Hastings wonders why Netflix’s instability in India is frustrating. It’s high time Netflix understands that India ain’t a market they can ignore.
