Considering the ending of Extraction 2, it is clear that Netflix is interested in adding more entries to Chris Hemsworth’s globally prominent action thriller franchise. The sophomore Extraction entry arrived on the streaming platform in June this year, receiving a much better response than the first film (2020). This scenario has inspired Netflix to continue Tyler Rake’s story in the third film. Netflix’s film chief, Scott Stuber, has given a positive update about Extraction 3.
In his recent interview with Collider, Stuber talked about Extraction 3 in great detail. He agreed that the second film was better than the first one as it was “emotional and complex”. He also mentioned how they were able to evolve the franchise after adding Idris Elba to the cast. “We’re waiting on the script and working hard, but aspiration would be great to get it back. I mean, what those guys have done has been really great in that franchise.”
Extraction 2 succeeded at making viewers believe that Tyler survived his brutal injuries from the first film. It dedicates the first 20-25 minutes towards showing the protagonist’s recovery. The sequel also explored how Tyler’s mindset was affected. He had no alternative but to work hard to get back in shape to save Ketevan (Tinatin Dalakishvili) and her children from prison. Ketevan is Mia’s sister, and Mia is Tyler’s ex-wife.
Stuber also believes that the Extraction filming unit “lost some momentum” due to the recently concluded SAG-AFTRA strike. This is the reason why Netflix has not yet officially added Extraction 3 to its schedule list.
Many things can happen in Extraction 3. For instance, the third entry could flesh out the dynamic between Nik and Tyler. Will they keep their relationship completely professional? Or will we see some romantic connection between them?
In addition, executive producer Joe Russo has teased the possibility of the Extraction Cinematic Universe (ECU) in the past. In one of his interviews with Collider, he said this: “We are working at building out a universe of films that could potentially explore some of the other characters from the first movie and some new characters and see more historical interaction between the characters.”
Extraction 3 could also give birth to many spinoffs, particularly a spinoff based on Nik’s life. Golshifteh Farahani has established Nik as one of the most likeable and intriguing characters in the franchise. It will be fascinating to see more of her in a future spinoff (if it ever receives greenlight from Netflix). Stream all Extraction films on Netflix. Stay tuned for more updates.
