Oscars have issued an official confirmation that it would be allowing digital movies to be nominated and contend for the awards for the year 2020. It is an unprecedented move, as Oscars follows a strict guideline when it comes to nominations.
Usually, any movie to be eligible for Oscars has to have a minimum of one week theatrical run in the US. It is the reason why many Netflix or other streaming platform movies generally don’t get nominated. However, due to the coronavirus crisis, all the theatres are shut down currently. It means no theatrical release. The awards can’t happen if the rule is followed as it is.
It is the reason why the Oscars body has made an exception for 2020. It is a temporary one, and things will be back to normal once the cinemas become operative again.
