The covid-19 pandemic has meant that the watching movie in cinemas is a distant dream. It is prohibited currently, and it doesn’t look like changing anytime soon. Under these extraordinary circumstances, Oscars have come with a remarkable decision.
Oscars have issued an official confirmation that it would be allowing digital movies to be nominated and contend for the awards for the year 2020. It is an unprecedented move, as Oscars follows a strict guideline when it comes to nominations.
Usually, any movie to be eligible for Oscars has to have a minimum of one week theatrical run in the US. It is the reason why many Netflix or other streaming platform movies generally don’t get nominated. However, due to the coronavirus crisis, all the theatres are shut down currently. It means no theatrical release. The awards can’t happen if the rule is followed as it is.
It is the reason why the Oscars body has made an exception for 2020. It is a temporary one, and things will be back to normal once the cinemas become operative again.
It means it will be an excellent opportunity for all the digital giants to make a mark. Let’s see if anyone can genuinely surprise as the competition would be among a more extensive set, this time.
