Fallout Season 2 will likely explore the dynamics of the strange bond between Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell) and Cooper Howard/The Ghoul (Walton Goggins), given how Season 1 ended. Has Lucy become like Howard? Let’s delve deep into this mess!
The finale of Fallout Season 1 ends with Lucy following The Ghoul out into the Wasteland after killing what was left of her mother in her Ghoul form. She kills her mother to spare her from her misery of living as a Ghoul. The man responsible for turning Lucy’s mother into such a horrifying creature was none other than her father, Hank.
Episode 8 shows Moldaver explaining Hank’s true origins to Lucy and what he did to her mother, Rose. She also reveals that Hank is still loyal to Vault-Tec. When Rose, still human, yearned for a life on the surface, she clashed with her husband’s allegiance to Vault-Tec. As a result, she left the vault with infants Norm and Lucy. Hank did not like this and used all his resources to find Rose and his children. Upon locating his family, he took the children with him and dropped a nuclear bomb on Shady Sands, which also turned Rose into a Ghoul.
In a recent interview with GQ, Ella Purnell discussed Lucy’s final moments in Season 1 and how her character slowly turned into Goggins’ Ghoul.
“By killing her mum in a mercy kill, she’s doing exactly what the Ghoul did to Roger [in episode four]. She’s learnt from him. She has turned into him. When she said, “I’ll never be you,” maybe that’s not true. And in that moment, when she shoots her mum, it means so many things. It means, ‘I’m coming with you.’ It means, ‘I’m gonna meet my makers.’ It means, ‘I f***ing hate you, but I have turned into you, you were right.’ It means she’s letting go of her golden centre,” Purnell said.
Season 1 was one hell of a ride for Purnell’s Lucy in terms of character development. Now, she has truly endured the horrors of the Wasteland. Plus, she has to come to terms with what her father did to Shady Sands and her mother. Given the Ghoul’s ruthless nature, Lucy’s choice to follow him raises concerns about her own potential descent into darkness. She would be less naive, jolly, and wide-eyed in Season 2.
