Even as ‘Fauda‘ remains a favourite espionage and political thriller for Netflix viewers, the streaming giant is gearing up to premiere its next Netflix Original Series from Fauda writer, Yuval Yefet, and its director, Rotem Shamir. The series is titled ‘Rough Diamonds’, and it is a crime drama set not in Israel, but in the diamond hub of Antwerp, Belgium. ‘Rough Diamonds’ premieres on Netflix worldwide on 21st April, 2023.
‘Rough Diamonds’ is a joint project between Netflix and Belgian public broadcaster Eén. It is set in the backdrop of the ultra-orthodox Jewish community in the Belgian city of Antwerp, widely considered the diamond industry capital of the world. ‘Rough Diamonds’ is produced by Belgian production house De Mensen and Israeli production company Keshet International (KI).
Unlike ‘Fauda’, ‘Rough Diamonds’ is an out and out crime drama, with family at the centre of the story. The eight-part crime thriller series revolves around an ultra-orthodox Jewish family in Belgium’s Antwerp Diamond Square Mile. Belgian actor Kevin Janssens plays Noah Wolfson, the rebellious son of a powerful Jewish diamond businessman, who gives up his ultra-orthodox Jewish life, but returns to salvage the crumbling business of his family.
Once back in Antwerp, he discovers that his brother is engaged in shadowy business dealings with shady people that has comprised his family’s once-powerful business. Noah gets enmeshed in a perilous world of crime, in trying to save his family’s business and personal interests.
Besides Kevin Janssens, ‘Rough Diamonds’ features actors Dudu Fisher, Yona Elian, Casper Knopf, Tine Joustra, Mendy Cahan, Ini Massez, Robbie Cleiren, Jeroen Vander Ven, Marie Vinck and Els Dottermans, among others, in primary roles.
The series will stream in Dutch, English and Yiddish, for the benefit of Belgian, Israeli and global viewers. The official Netflix synopsis of ‘Rough Diamonds’ reads, “When a prodigal son sends his family’s empire into crushing debt, his estranged brother returns to Antwerp’s diamond district to pick up the pieces”.
‘Rough Diamonds’ premieres on Netflix worldwide on 21st April, 2023. Stay tuned to Binged.com for the trailer of the series.
