Feyd-Rautha Fiasco: Austin Butler Deserved More Screen Time In Dune 2

Feyd-Rautha Fiasco: Austin Butler Deserved More Screen Time In Dune 2

When was the last time you got a film with a cast as stacked as Dune: Part Two? It was a long time ago, right? Despite earning critical acclaim globally, the latest Denis Villeneuve movie suffers from one major flaw. And that is how little screen time it gives to the supporting cast members, particularly to Austin Butler’s Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen. Butler’s powerful and psychotic take on Feyd-Rautha is one of the film’s biggest positives. However, many viewers feel like the Elvis actor received insultingly little screen time in Part Two.

Austin Butler plays Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, the youngest nephew of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen and heir to House Harkonnen in Dune 2. Denis Villeneuve’s latest adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel brilliantly brings out the sociopathic side of Feyd-Rautha. It is safe to say that Butler does not disappoint with his performance in the film. His chilling and deranged portrayal of ‘na-Baron’ overshadows the performances of many of the film’s supporting cast members. He deserved way more screen time than what we got in Dune: Part Two.

The latest Dune entry mainly belongs to Timothee Chalamet (Paul), Zendaya (Chani), and Rebecca Ferguson (Lady Jessica). Apart from these three fine talents, we don’t see enough of the other cast members in the film. It is not just about Feyd-Rautha, other characters like Princess Irulan and Emperor Shaddam IV are of great importance too in Frank Herbert’s novels. But in Dune 2, we hardly see them. Their little screen time feels like an insult to the talents of Florence Pugh and Christopher Walken.

After failing to take control of the spice production in Arrakis, Baron gives the command of the desert planet from Rabban (Dave Bautista) to Feyd-Rautha. The Bene Gesserit also show great interest in Feyd-Rautha as they see him as a tool to gain more control over House Harkonnen and suppress the threat of Muad’Dib, aka Paul Atreides.

Austin Butler steals every scene in which he is in. His interactions with other characters are sensational to watch. It is a damn shame that Denis Villeneuve wasted him and his talents in the film. The helmer could have done so much more with him. What makes this scenario even more disappointing is that Villeneuve’s representation of Frank Herbert’s Feyd-Rautha is accurate, as per many fans. Dune: Part Two is running in theatres worldwide. Stay tuned for more updates.
