The nominees for the much anticipated second edition of My Glamm Filmfare OTT Awards 2021 were announced yesterday for original Hindi shows or films released across Indian OTT platforms between 1st August 2020 and 31st July 2021.
Hansal Mehta’s SonyLIV web series ‘Scam 1992’ had unsurprisingly swept an impressive 14 nominations in various categories. While Amazon Prime Video’s immensely popular shows ‘Mirzapur S2’ and ‘The Family Man S2’ bagged 13 and 12 nominations respectively.
Out of the total of 28 award categories, one actor’s name which was conspicuous by its absence was that of the supremely talented yet still severely underrated Kay Kay Menon.
We are referring to nominations for the ‘Best Actor, Web Original Film (Male)’ category of the Filmfare OTT award. Six actors have been nominated in this category. The list includes Bobby Deol for ‘Class of 83’, Manav Kaul for ‘Ajeeb Daastaans’ Manoj Bajpayee for ‘Ray’, Naseeruddin Shah for ‘Mere Raqsam’, Nawazuddin Siddiqui for ‘Serious Men’, and Pankaj Tripathi for ‘Kaagaz’.
We understand that picking out the best performances from a pool of actors is subjective. But, leaving out Kay Kay Menon’s spellbinding act from the Netflix anthology ‘Ray’ seems to be a glaring omission for the actor’s ardent fans and cinephiles in general. Kay Kay Menon’s terrific performance in the anthology’s segment ‘Bahrupiya’ garnered immense acclaim from audiences and critics alike.
To say that Kay Kay Menon’s riveting performance in Ray’s ‘Bahrupiya’ was not selected because it wasn’t a full-length feature film is also not true. Because another terrific performance by Manoj Bajpayee from the same anthology and Manav Kaul’s act from ‘Ajeeb Daastaans’ both have been nominated for the same category.
Perhaps the selection process disallowing two actors from the same film could have been a reason for Kay Kay Menon not being nominated. Because Manoj Bajpayee’s performance from Ray’s ‘Hungama Hai Kyon Barpa’ segment is also deservedly nominated. However, that’s speculation.
The nominations are ostensibly based on an audience voting system. But in order to maintain the quality and credibility of these awards, there should have been a provision for a wildcard entry that deserves to be nominated – Kay Kay Menon in this case.
We are of the opinion that Kay Kay Menon truly deserved to be nominated for the ‘Best Actor, Web Original Film (Male)’ category of the Filmfare OTT 2021 awards, even if there was an extra seventh nomination for the aforementioned category. And there is still time to do that. Do you concur?
