The much awaited Shah Rukh Khan film is high on buzz in India, but it is facing protests from a huge number of filmmakers and activists in Bangladesh.
Previously, Hindi films were banned in Bangladesh and Shahrukh’s ‘Pathaan’ was the first Hindi film in ten years to be released in Bangladesh. Pathaan was followed by Salman Khan’s ‘Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan’. Both the films underperformed at the Bangladeshi box office and did not do a good business. Jawan, however, has a higher buzz and does not follow the pattern of the previous two films. They were released after a long window of the Indian release, after the hype had died down. In the case of Jawan, the bookings are going on simultaneously with India and the US and the film has a higher chance of success.
Theater owners and distributors are enthusiastic about Jawan. The Bangladeshi government and the film industry have reached a compromise where they allow the release of 10 Hindi movies per year. But a guild of filmmakers Delwar Jahan Jhantu, AQ Khokon, Saimon Tariq do not want, however, Jawan to release in Bangladesh as it will affect the business of the Bangladeshi films. They also argue that the movie is also not adhering to the established norms for Hindi films in the country.
Other institutions like the Bangladesh Parichalak Samiti state that the local films have outshined the imported films and the Hindi films are not adding anything culturally in the country, and it will disrupt the smooth business in the Bangladeshi film industry.
