Few weeks ago South Korean Auteur Park Chan Wook’s masterpiece work Oldboy (2003), the first installment in the Vengeance trilogy started streaming on Amazon Prime India. It was a sigh of relief for many movie-buffs and average movie-goers as their long-in-the-watchlist film is finally available to stream in India. Here’s another good news! The film is now also streaming on the OTT platform in Hindi. For all the hindi speaking folks who prefer to watch International films without subtitles, this is a good chance.
OTT platforms like Amazon Prime Video and Netflix are rigorously investing on dubbing Korean titles to Hindi and other regional languages to cater to Indian demographic. This is a wise move as far as the streaming giants are concerned as it would increase viewership for the platform. Since Oldboy is already available in Hindi, we can expect Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam audios too in some time.
The South Korean neo-noir action thriller is directed and co-written by Park Chan-wook. It stars Choi Min-sik in a career defining role alongside Ka ng Hye-jung and Yoo Ji-tae. A loose adaptation of the Japanese manga of the same name, Oldboy follows the story of Oh Dae-su, who is imprisoned in a cell which resembles a hotel room for 15 years without knowing the identity of his captor nor his captor’s motives. When he is finally released, Dae-su finds himself still trapped in a web of conspiracy and violence. His own quest for vengeance becomes tied in with romance when he falls in love with an attractive young sushi chef, Mi-do.
Oldboy won the Grand Prix at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. The film has received widespread acclaim in the United States, and now worldwide post Parasite’s Oscar win. It also received praise for its action sequences, most notably the single shot corridor fight sequence. The film has had two remakes, an unauthorised 2006 Hindi film ‘Zinda’ and a 2013 American film. Both the South Korean original and American remake are streaming on Amazon Prime Video India.
