Prasar Bharati has finally launched its OTT platform. After more than 1.5 years of contemplation and rumours, the result is here.
The infant OTT platform is called Waves and it is available on Android and iOS. The platform, marketed as “Waves – Family Entertainment Ki Nayi Lehar”, has a variety of content for all ages, including around 40 live channels.
Popular channels such as B4U, ABZY, SAB Group, and 9X Media are available, alongside major news networks like India Today, News Nation, Republic, and NDTV India. Also, all Doordarshan and Akashvani channels are featured as expected.
To make Waves more attractive to content creators, Prasar Bharati has introduced a new revenue-sharing model. Participating broadcasters will receive 65% of the ad revenue, while Prasar Bharati retains the remaining 35%.
The new platform has a lot of things to figure out. The first one is naturally the audience. If Prasar Bharati is targeting a scattered set of audience then it is naturally a benefit for its competitor. Having a live TV option is great for people who used to love conventional TV but at the same time, it will not be very attractive for the younger generation who mostly spends time on streaming.
Anyway, this is just the beginning. Let’s see what kind of waves, Waves creates.
