Snapdeal is one of India’s leading e-commerce platforms that was going great guns a few years ago. And then a controversy surrounding its brand ambassador happened, which led to a decline. Still, it is the third biggest only behind, Amazon and Flipkart.
In a surprise move, Snapdeal has decided to enter the OTT space. It is tying up with Hungama Play to generate original content. The content will include short videos, shorts, series and movies. They will be available in multiple languages and for free streaming on its platform.
However, the announcement has come as a surprise because of the timing. The e-commerce sector and business, in general, have been hit hard due to the coronavirus lockdown. The government, after a lot of dillydallying, has decided not to allow non-essential items to be delivered in the pandemic times. It has brought the stocks of these platforms to an all-time low.
However, the top executives at Snapdeal and Hungama Play are of the belief that no matter what the smartphone is indispensable. People, more than ever, are spending time on their phones currently. It is why it would be an ideal time for the partnership and the launch, they feel.
