Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga helmer George Miller has commented on why he decided to choose Anya Taylor-Joy over Charlize Theron for the lead role in a recent interview with Empire.
Charlize Theron played the iconic Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road (2015). The Academy Award-winning actress gave her all to the film. From shaving her head to undergoing intense training for her stunts shows her commitment to the character and the overall project. It is hard to stand out against a guy like Tom Hardy, who himself is a talent powerhouse. But she did it with ease. Her ability to flawlessly bring out Furiosa’s vulnerabilities and give the character an intriguing and hard-hitting emotional depth made Furiosa memorable.
Miller could have just de-aged Theron for Furiosa. Instead, he chose Anya Taylor-Joy for the job. He offered his views about this scenario in a recent talk with Empire.
“It definitely would have been Charlize [had Furiosa been made before Fury Road]. As time went on, I began thinking, ‘Oh, maybe we could do de-ageing. Then I watched really masterful filmmakers like Ang Lee and Martin Scorsese, doing Gemini Man and The Irishman, and I saw that it hadn’t been licked. All you’d be watching is, ‘Look how well the technology works?’ It would not have been persuasive.”
Despite being an interesting approach, the de-aging method has noticeable flaws. One of the major problems with this approach is that it fails to capture the full range of human emotions, a criticism that plagued Ang Lee’s The Gemini Man and Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman. Plus, the de-aging technique often ends up distracting viewers, negatively impacting the viewing experience along the way.
Anya Taylor-Joy looks perfect as Furiosa. The film’s trailer proved that the actress is capable of capturing the character’s intensity and ravenousness to seek vengeance. Chris Hemsworth as Dementus also looked sensational. But it was Joy who made the trailer amazing. In addition, she is a highly talented actress. All she needs is a great and fleshed-out backstory from George Miller. Young Furiosa is not as badass as Theron’s version. We may see the character trying to make sense of everything happening around her and learn as she grows.
