The trailer showed promises as the series did deliver, at least that’s what the early reviews say. The epic Japanese tale focuses on action, build-up, and, as some reviews say, it is Game of Thrones if it took place in Japan.
Based on a 1975 novel under the same title, James Clavell’s literary creation is now ruling over the reviews, and after the release, it shows the promise to rule the OTT world as well.
Clash of cultures, the series is more than just a battle between two nations; it also focuses a lot on character build-up.
English sailor John Blackthorne, shipwrecked in 17th-century Japan, finds himself battling for survival amidst a cultural clash with the powerful Lord Toranaga. Thrown into a world of political intrigue, Blackthorne navigates treacherous alliances, forbidden love with translator Mariko, and brutal samurai customs.
Facing execution, he cunningly earns Toranaga’s respect, rising to become his trusted advisor. Now, straddling two worlds, Blackthorne shapes Japan’s fate, forever grappling with loyalty to his homeland and the allure of his adopted life.
Now, coming to the reviews, several comparisons are being drawn that this series will fill up the Game of Thrones gap amidst the mediocrity of redoing the series by all means.
High production value to the large cast, the series manages to deliver on what was promised. Also, one plus point of the series is that, as the cast is largely Japanese, they didn’t shy from using their native language when necessary.
Hiroyuki Sanada, raised and praised, the man delivers one grand performance after he showed his class in John Wick; Sanada manages to deliver again in Shōgun.
The review of the time perfectly sums up the show, “FX’s Shōgun Isn’t a Remake—It’s a Revelation,” and so it does, showing how to make a grand show.
In terms of other technical aspects, the camerawork is nothing but astounding, and paired up with perfect color grading, it is soothing to the eyes. Add the phenomenal sound work, the spices are definitely all coherent, making the best hot dish you can consume.
