Gadar 2 Production Starts With Sunny Deol: Do We Need This Sequel?

Gadar 2 Production Starts With Sunny Deol: Do We Need This Sequel?

It seems like the rumours were true. Ameesha Patel’s latest tweet has confirmed that the production work for Gadar 2 commenced today. The iconic duo of Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel is ready to grace the big screens again. Of course, Anil Sharma is helming the much-awaited sequel.

Patel mentioned in her tweet that the ‘muharat’ for Gadar 2 took place in Himachal Pradesh. She appeared in her famous Punjabi look with an orange suit. On the other hand, Deol was wearing a red kurta with a white turban.

But here’s the main question. Do we need a Gadar sequel right now? Will it honour the original entry or tarnish its image for good? Let’s find out!

Fans are finding themselves in the sea of nostalgia after witnessing Gadar 2 production tweets. They cannot believe that they are going to watch the pair of Tara Singh and Sakeena again. But we also cannot ignore the track record of Bollywood when it comes to sequels.

More than 20 years have passed since the arrival of the original Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001) in theatres. Sunny Deol’s outstanding performance, hard-hitting dialogues, unforgettable scenes, and late Amrish Puri’s magnetic screen presence were enough to make it a gigantic success.

Everything has changed a lot in the last 20 years. The taste of modern moviegoers has also changed drastically. Is Anil Sharma capable of recreating the charm of the original Gadar in present times? There is no doubt that Sharma is one of the veteran directors in the Bollywood film industry. But he has not given a mega-hit in the last 14 years of his directional career. His last box office sensation was Apne that came out in 2007. Is the director looking to revive his career? Only time will tell us.

Now, let’s shift our focus to the leading duo. We do not know when was the last time we watched Deol and Patel in a smashing hit. The latter’s career was on the verge of culmination. Thanks to Anil Sharma for giving it a much-needed meaning and worth.

Bollywood has a long and shameful history of ruining the original movies in the name of stupid and exhausted sequels. Film series like Ghayal, Golmaal, Race, Dabangg, Force, Student of the Year, Bunty Aur Babli, and many more are some of the best examples of this pathetic situation. And if we add the present mood and preference of the Indian cinephiles, it seems like Gadar 2 may struggle hard to survive at the box office.
