‘Gangs of New York’ TV Show In The Works, Martin Scorsese To Helm

Miramax is breathing new life into Herbert Asbury’s 1927 novel, The Gangs of New York, and Martin Scorsese’s 2002 film adaptation of the same name in the form of a television show. Plus, the legendary director will executively produce the project and helm the first couple of episodes.

Martin Scorsese has delivered numerous iconic movies in his legendary filmmaking career. However, many believe that his 2002 film adaptation of Asbury’s novel is not among the Helmer’s best works. The movie’s production process endured several obstacles before getting its theatrical release. Former co-chairman of Miramax Films, Harvey Weinstein, was reportedly not too ecstatic about many of the film’s scenes, especially the fight sequences. The project suffered several cuts, resulting in the postponement of the film’s release for an entire year. The cast led by Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Cameron Diaz did a sensational job. However, the overall film seemed flawed to a lot of prominent critics.

This is what Scorsese said about the tv series during the announcement:

“This time and era of America’s history and heritage is rich with characters and stories that we could not fully explore in a two-hour film. A television series allows us the time and creative freedom to bring this colorful world, and all the implications it had and still does on our society, to life.”

Brett Leonard has been hired to pen down the show’s script. Reportedly, his script impressed Martin Scorsese so much that the director came on board for the project. Also, the forthcoming TV adaptation will be taken out to buyers later this month. (Source: Deadline)

Gangs of New York’ tv series will soon find its streaming platform. Stay tuned for more updates.
