Everyone remembers how Alia Bhatt starrer ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ came this year when Hindi box-office was struggling to find grounds post-pandemic as a sigh of relief. The film opened at 10+ crores and went on to gross over 150 crores domestic and 206 crores worldwide in 50% occupancy. The film quickly went on to become a global phenomenon and we learn that Gangubai Kathiawadi is now being campaigned for all categories at the BAFTA Awards!
The Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial didn’t just stop with its box-office rampage at the theatres, but continued it during and post the streaming release on Netflix too. Gangubai Kathiawadi trended at the top in over 25 countries and currently ranks within top 3 most watched Non-English films list on Netflix this year, next to S S Rajamouli’s ‘RRR’. Not to mention the rage the film became all over East Asia within no time. The film trended and became a pop-culture phenomenon in Thailand, Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia etc.
Based on the book, Mafia Queens of Mumbai, the film follows the rise of a simple girl Ganga who was sold to a brothel. Unable to escape the hell she was pushed into, she embraces fate and eventually becomes Gangubai, mafia queen and voice of the oppressed.
Gangubai Kathiawadi had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival and is being submitted in Best Film, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Leading Actress and Film Not in the English Language categories respectively at the BAFTA Awards. For the unversed, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas was previously nominated at the 56th BAFTA Awards in the Film Not in English language category. The director is also said to be in London to deliver a BAFTA Masterclass on November 28. Let us wait and watch to see if the master will repeat history once again at the BAFTA Awards with Gangubai Kathiawadi.
