After the disastrous ‘G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra’ and ‘G.I.Joe: Retaliation’, it seemed like we were never going to get a good live action project based off the hit animated series (and action figures). But in the age of sequels, reboots and spin-offs, Paramount Pictures decided to give it another go with a sequel, G.I.Joe: Ever Vigilant but first, a spin-off film centered around the much beloved character Snake Eyes which will be titled the same has just completed production.
Because of the failed attempts of the first two films, due to the bad writing and sub-par performances, any potential sequel was written off by the production house. This solo feature film revolving around everyone’s favourite ninja is set to show why people love this character and the franchise in the first place. This film will focus on the origin story of Snake Eyes and his rival/‘brother’ Storm Shadow.
There hasn’t been any plot details announced as of yet, but as mentioned earlier, it will showcase the rivalry between the two famous practitioners of the ninja arts. Robert Schwentke is set to direct while Henry Golding (from ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ and ‘The Gentlemen’) is set to play the titular character and Andrew Koji (from ‘Warrior’) is set to portray Storm Shadow. The spin-off boasts a varied cast including Ursula Corbero (from ‘Money Heist’), Samara Weaving, Peter Mensah, Iko Uwais, Takehiro Hira and Haruka Abe.
Henry Golding has called the film production “insane”. Golding’s first week on set was extremely physically demanding and by the end of the week, the actor admitted he couldn’t even squat down to sit on a chair. The film is set to be more of a martial arts film than a superhero film, adds the actor.
Snake Eyes was initially scheduled to release theatrically earlier this year, but due to the pandemic it has been pushed to October 22nd 2021. With one film wrapped up and another going into production, we can’t wait to see what the franchise has to offer next.
