Glen Powell has become a household name in a very short period, thanks to the record-breaking success of Top Gun: Maverick and the unexpected box office triumph of Anyone But You. The sequel to the original Top Gun (1986) had all the hype in the world before its theatrical release, mainly due to the fans’ immense nostalgia attached to the first film and the mesmerising charisma of its leading man, Tom Cruise, who played Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the sequel. Maverick grossed nearly $1.5 billion at the global box office and provided a significant boost to the careers of emerging talents, such as Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, and Lewis Pullman. A couple of years later, we are seeing Powell become a major star in Hollywood. Did you know he turned down the offer to star in the next Jurassic World movie?
In his recent sit-down with The Hollywood Reporter, Powell talked about turning down the offers to star in the next Jurassic World project and a Bourne Identity update. “Jurassic is one of my favorite movies. It’s one of the things I’ve wanted to do my whole life. I’m not doing that movie because I read the script and I immediately was like, my presence in this movie doesn’t help it,” he said.
Powell did praise the film’s script, though. “It’s not about that. It’s about choosing where you’re going to make an audience happy and where you’re going to make yourself happy,” he added.
Glen Powell has already earned a reputation for being picky with his roles. His filmography choices, including recent hits like Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone But You, suggest he values popcorn entertainers. His upcoming project, Twisters, is another addition to this genre. But he also prioritises quality films, such as Richard Linklater’s action comedy Hit Man, scheduled to arrive in selected theatres on May 24, 2024. It will arrive on Netflix on June 7, 2024. The film has earned critical acclaim, standing with a ‘fresh’ score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 79 critic reviews. His performance in the movie received praise as well.
Glen Powell appears to be strategically building his career. He’s leveraging his recent success to land leading roles while prioritizing scripts he finds compelling. This approach could lead him to become a major Hollywood star known for both blockbuster appeal and strong acting chops. Stay tuned for more updates.
