Last week on 5th September, The Greatest of All Times (GOAT) was released worldwide. The film made a significant opening with 43 crores collection in India alone. But the film was officially not released in India. Most of the national cinema chains refused to release the movie in their screens in North. This led the movie to be confined only in smaller theatres in the Northern states. Without national screens, the film still has managed a collection of more than 12 crores from its Hindi dub version, that too only in 7 days.
By crossing the mark of 12 crores the film has now entered the list of All-Time Highest Grossing Hindi Dubbed Kollywood Movies. It now stands in the ninth position in the list surpassing Indian (12 crores) and I (11.50 crores). As the film is just a week old, it can expect to go further top in the list. Currently, the list is topped by Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar starrer 2.0 (190 crores), succeeded by Vijay’s own Leo (31 crores). It can be predicted that in due course of time, the film might surpass several other films and reach the rank of fourth or fifth. But with good reception, it can also stand in the top three as well.
With such a performance, critics, fans and makers are not happy with the film. Being made with a humongous budget of 340 crores, the film is expected to do better than this. Plus, the dual role of Vijay is another X factor for the movie. Also, the fact that it is one of the last films of Vijay, gives it even more advantage; Vijay fans are expected to watch the film and considering the huge fanbase Vijay has now in the North, is not displayed in these figures.
The film obviously has failed to perform like Leo (the last film of Vijay), which became the highest grossing film of his career. Considering the hype the film had around it, the reception did not meet the expectation. Still, the film is worth praising as it accumulated such a collection in just 7 days of release, that too without the backing of national cinema chains.
