By now, it is a well-known fact that Chiranjeevi‘s upcoming film Godfather is the official remake of the Malayalam blockbuster Lucifer. With the release date drawing near and the buzz very low, this latest move from the makers is hilarious and downright embarrassing.
What would be one of the worst decisions the makers of a remake can do? To dub and release the remake in the language of the original film. And what do the makers of the big-budget film ‘Godfather’ do? Just that. Though the strategy did not go the way it was meant to, it has gotten the attention of social media and has the viewers in splits.
The original film Lucifer directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran is the highest-grossing Malayalam film yet. That means that a huge majority of the people of Kerala have already seen it. With the film available for watch in Telugu, Malayalam, and Tamil on OTT, even more people have seen the political drama. In the event of the trade doubting whether the film will get viewers in Telugu, why the makers want the Malayalam audience to watch Lucifer’s Telugu remake with a Malayalam dub is straight-up bizarre.
The Twitterati has jumped on the opportunity and is already trolling the announcement left right and center. Honestly, what were the producers thinking? When even some Telugu audiences say they would rather watch the original on OTT, this move was the last thing the makers should have done. On the bright side though, it has brought some attention to the film.
The most logical possibility is that since the movie was marketed initially as a pan indian venture, the makers felt obliged to dub it into Malayalam. After everything is said and done, we hope the film crosses all our expectations and does well for the sake of the theatre owners who bear the brunt of all the films failing during these testing times while producers are cushioned due to satellite, OTT, and music rights.
The movie is set to release on October 5th and will clash with ‘The Ghost’ starring Nagarjuna. With the latter having a good buzz and being a sleek action film, the makers of Godfather need to up their strategies if they want to put up a good fight.
