One of the longest-running franchises in the history of films, featured in 38 films, you can already imagine that it has all the possibility to get stale among all extravagant numbers. However, Japan might have come up with something that has the potential to take it out of this sense of monotony.
Enter Godzilla Minus One, set in Japan; this film goes back to the very beginning of the Godzilla origin story.
Now, there is a problem with most Godzilla or, for that matter, Kong (King Kong) films: either they very much underestimate the situation or just focus too much on the monster side of the events. Obviously, it will be centered around the monsters; you can’t really omit them.
But most of them can’t perfectly hit the sweet spot for the human intervention part. However, the newest film in the Japanese side of the franchise hits the perfect spot, as it not only tells the tale of Godzilla but also focuses on post-World War 2 Japan where the country is suffering.
The crisis does not only exist through the economy; it has already hit rock bottom, but the people who survived the war have already undergone mental trauma, facing a life-threatening event, again. And after Godzilla came to life, the fear was prominent throughout the trailer.
Though again, this doesn’t take anything from Godzilla itself, this film feels more human-centric, making it break the trend as humans try to get adjusted to this new world with some bigger threats.
The film also had a very buzzy theatrical run in Japan, but that was practically expected. But as Godzilla arrives at the North American Box Office, it grossed $11M in the first three days, on its way to having the best opening for any foreign language title.
The film also became the first foreign film in 19 years to sit at the very top of the Box Office, truly breaking the stereotype. The last time this phenomenon occurred, it was with Hero, and that too in August 2004.
Milestones and monotony, two birds with one stone as Godzilla Minus One offers fans one of the most exciting times ahead. And as dawn approaches for the newest Monsterverse film, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Godzilla and Kong fans will have a feast ahead.
