The winners of the 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards were announced today, springing a surprise or two in some categories, and staying true to expectations in others. The Awards Night was presented by Jo Koy. The Golden Globe Awards were held live at the Beverly Hilton, in Beverly Hills, California.
As expected, Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece ‘Oppenheimer’ swept the awards categories, picking up five awards, including Best Drama Film, Best Director for Nolan, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., and Best Original Score.
Neon’s ‘Anatomy of a Fall’, frontrunner to pick up the Best Non-English Language Feature at the Golden Globes 2024, expectedly won in the category, and unexpectedly, also picked up the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay.
On the TV side, HBO’s ‘Succession’ led the awards with four Globes, followed by FX’s ‘The Bear’, and Netflix’s ‘Beef’ with three each. Apple TV Plus and Prime Video were conspicuous with zero wins this year. Apple Movies, however, picked up an award for Killers Of The Flower Moon. HBO’s celebrated ‘The Last Of Us’ failed to pick up a Globe in any category.
Lily Gladstone made history by becoming the first Indigenous person to win a Golden Globe for Best Actress. Netflix’s ‘Beef’ became the first show created by and starring Asian Americans to win a Golden Globe in its category.
Two new categories make their debut at the Golden Globes this year – Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television; while two Award categories bid goodbye to the Golden Globes – the Cecil B DeMille Award and the Carol Burnett Award.
This year, the Globes have changed ownership. The awards event was earlier a non-profit, owned by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. However, after charges of being biased, non-inclusive, and poorly represented by POC, and other countries of the world, the Golden Globes is now a for-profit awards event, owned by PMC, and Dick Clark Productions in a joint venture with Eldridge. The Awards now include 300 members representing 76 countries in the world.
