The National Film Development Corporation, hosted a Roadshow to launch the 55th International Film Festival of India.
The media experts, people from the industry, everyone was there.
The main initiative of this festival was to give opportunities to new talents, to honour debut films by Indian filmmakers and give opportunity to fresh minds.
Now, think about it as it is the 55th film festival and how many new faces as a filmmaker have emerged from the crowd?
This initiative invites 100 young talents across various filmmaking disciplines to apply by 10th September. It aims to make them future filmmakers and provide them with valuable opportunities.
Although the thought behind this initiative is great, just saying that and then sitting in a close kennt group doesn’t help.
There is zero sign of new filmmakers who got the opportunity in the right way.
We have to understand the industry is ruled by big names and anything below the belt has no place in the Indian film industry.
In the festival, like Cannes, after 30 years an Indian movie was screened directed by Payal Kapadia,“All We Imagine as Light”. A simple yet thought provoking story about mumbai.
But it was set to release in UK theatres, not in India.
So, all these fresh minds, all these initiatives are of what use? When the fresh minds aren’t given the space to showcase their storytelling or creativity.
This initiative gave out a huge opportunity, Film Bazaar 2024 will offer a first-time cash grant of $20,000 for the top three winning co- production projects.
But what goes under the table who knows?
From the film schools, every year lots of good movies come out, and they take it up to the producer’s table and sometimes the idea gets simply stolen or dismissed .
Then what is the point of all this?
If you really want to give opportunities to the fresh mind to showcase their talents then give them a threat free zone to work in first, and not only the initiative an assurance is much needed.
