Indian government recently allowed 100% occupancy in theatres after a long time. It is surely a happy moment for the theatre owners, filmmakers, actors and all those who love going to the cinemas for that big screen feel. This decision comes in the light of the fact that in India the number of new corona cases have declined and also the vaccination process has had a great start.
Having been shut for several months and then opening with limited capacity, took a great toll on the people of the entertainment industry, especially theatre/multiplex owners and film producers. Having survived the tough times, now is the opportunity for them to bounce back stronger. But do they have everything they need for that?
Well, if we consider the southern zones, a number of big films, across languages, have announced their release dates. We have ‘RRR‘ on 13th October, ‘KGF Chapter 2’ on 16th July, ‘Karnan’ in April, ‘Vakeel Saab’ on 9th April, Acharya on 13th May, ‘Pushpa’ on 13th August, ‘Roberrt’ on 11th March, ‘Annaatthe’ on 4th November and many more. Most of these announcements came even before the government permitted full occupancy in theatres, reflecting the confidence of the filmmakers and actors of these films, on both their work and the audience.
But the same cannot be said in entirety about the Hindi entertainment industry, where while some big and most awaited films have a confirmed release date or month like Salman Khan’s ‘Radhe: The Most Wanted Bhai’ (Eid 2021), Ajay Devgn’s ‘Maidaan’ (15th October), Shahid Kapoor’s ‘Jersey’ (5th November) and Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Dhaakad’ (1st October) among others; films like Akshay Kumar’s ‘Sooryavanshi’ and ‘Bell Bottom’, Ranveer Singh’s ’83’, Amir Khan’s ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ and more have nothing else than just speculative release dates/months.
Moreover, Yash Raj Films, one of Bollywood’s prominent production houses, has not even hinted at release dates of any of its films, as of now. Among its upcoming films are Rani Mukherjee and Saif Ali Khan starrer ‘Bunty Aur Babli 2’, Ranbir Kapoor starrer ‘Shamshera’, Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra starrer ‘Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar’, Ranveer Singh starrer ‘Jayeshbhai Jordaar’ and Akshay Kumar starrer ‘Prithviraj’. Yash Raj Films has not revealed any update regarding any of these films and is silently following a wait and watch policy.
Probably now, when limited seating rule is out and silver screens can run at full potential, we can soon expect more and more release date announcements happening. Its only a matter of time and soon filmmakers and actors will be bombarding fans with back to back release dates.
