Greta Gerwig has offered a glimmer of hope about the highly anticipated ‘Barbie’ sequel. The talks about the sequel have amplified over time, considering the first film’s record-breaking financial success and positive critical reception. Gerwig has agreed to helm the second part if she manages to “find the undertow.”
Greta Gerwig was honoured as one of Time Magazine’s ‘Women of the Year’ on March 6 at the West Hollywood Edition. There, she spoke to one of the interviewers from Variety about her artistic procedure and plans for the ‘Barbie’ sequel.
It is unclear if Gerwig will helm the Barbie sequel. When asked about the second part, she said, “If I find the undertow, then we get it. If I don’t find an undertow, there’s no more.”
Gerwig is open to directing the sequel as long as she receives the right ideas. The director’s latest comments are somewhat opposite to her comments in July last year, where she implied that the odds of Barbie 2 happening were low, considering how much effort she gave to make the first film.
Barbie immensely benefited from the ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon last year, earning over $1.4 billion worldwide and receiving positive reactions from both critics and viewers. The film has been nominated in eight different categories at the 96th Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling). However, fans were not happy when Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig got snubbed in the categories of Best Actress and Best Director, respectively. However, the latter has earned an Oscar nomination with her husband, Noah Baumbach, for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Warner Bros has not yet greenlighted Barbie 2. Stay tuned for more updates.
