Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated fantasy comedy movie ‘Barbie’ is all set to be released in theatres this Friday on 21st July, coinciding with Christopher Nolan’s star-studded biographical epic ‘Oppenheimer’. With a runtime of just under two hours, ‘Barbie’ is the first ever live-action movie based on the iconic dolls by Mattel. And the first reviews for ‘Barbie’ are out now. Let’s see whether critics have liked the film or not.
As per reviews’ aggregation portal Rotten Tomatoes, ‘Barbie’ currently holds an impressive critics’ score of 88% based on 91 reviews. Moreover, on another reviews’ aggregator website Metacritic, the film has got a Metascore of 81, indicating ‘Universal Acclaim’.
So, overall ‘Barbie’ has received encouraging feedback and a big thumbs up so far from critics. After the film’s premiere too, a fan praised Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s performances as Barbie and Ken, respectively, and opined that the latter even deserves an Oscar. While another fan said that ‘Barbie’ is pure joy with a heartfelt social commentary.
Narrated by Helen Mirren, ‘Barbie’ follows the story of the titular character (played by Margot Robbie), whose perfect life takes an interesting turn, and she decides to take a trip to the real world along with an equally inquisitive Ken (Ryan Gosling). After reaching real-world Los Angeles, the duo gets a reality check as they discover the existence of sexism and patriarchy.
Besides Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in major roles, ‘Barbie’ also features Will Ferrell as Mattel CEO, Kingsley Ben-Adir as Ken #1, Simu Liu as Ken #2, Ncuti Gatwa as Ken #4, and John Cena as Kenmaid, amongst others. It would be interesting to see how ‘Barbie’ performs at the box office considering its clash with ‘Oppenheimer’ and how it’s received by the audiences. The verdict will be out very soon.
