Well, Netflix’s co-CEO Ted Sarandos spoke his heart after the release of Q3 earnings. Netflix added a whopping 8.76 million subscribers to its bag and the earnings were incredible as well. But, the company has still increased the prices. So where are all those growing numbers going?
Let’s not comment on that. There is a new statement by Ted Sarandos which needs to be discussed. Netflix releases viewing charts of their titles every Wednesday and it is a great resource to analyse the performance of films and series on the platform. Well, we must appreciate this level of transparency as it is rare to find in the competitors of Netflix.
Grumpy means an irritated person. Remember when you wanted to play outside as a child and your mom would say “Go wherever you want”. Well, she allowed you to play outside but you knew that she was not too happy about it.
Well, Ted Sarandos is doing something similar. He said that Netflix will be more transparent in the future but also defended that it “should not” be too transparent as it hampers the creators. Well, as for creators, they definitely have more access to the streaming data than us. So if not publishing streaming data is a concern for creators then it is a useless concern.
Regardless, Ted Sarandos said, “It was part of our promise with creators. At the time we started creating original programming, our creators felt like they were pretty trapped in this kind of overnight ratings world and weekend box office world defining their success and failures. And as we all know, a show might have enormous success down the road and it wasn’t captured in that opening box office. So part of this was the relationship with talent, not just the business aspects of it. And I do think that, over time, people are much more interested in this. We’re on the continuum today of, how much data do we publish? I think we’ve been leading the charge starting everyone down the path of a Top 10, publishing our Top 10 list and our annual wrap up list and everything to give a lot of transparency to the viewing. And I just expect will be more and more transparent.”
