Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 helmer James Gunn has confirmed that his upcoming Marvel directional will be longer than the previous two instalments.
It is great news considering that many of the latest MCU entries suffered from limited runtimes. Benedict Cumberbatch’s ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ had a runtime of 2 hours and 6 minutes. Taika Waititi’s ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ arrived with an even shorter runtime, only 1 hour and 59 minutes. And the latest addition to the MCU, ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’, clocked in at only 2 hours and 4 minutes. These flicks suffered from a rushed pace and gave inadequate time to the build-up of several characters’ arcs.
This is what Gunn said in his reply after being asked by a fan about GOTG Vol 3’s runtime: “It’s longer than 1 & 2.”
Although, the filmmaker did not reveal the exact runtime of the third Guardians entry. The first volume ran for nearly 2 hours and 2 minutes. And the second one clocked nearly 2 hours and 17 minutes.
Vol 3 needs a longer runtime than the previous entries as the stakes are higher than ever for the fan-favourite group of Ravagers. These intergalactic misfits will face adversaries they have never encountered before, High Evolutionary and Adam Warlock. The former is a notorious superhuman geneticist and scientist obsessed with evolving different life forms throughout the universe. On the other hand, Warlock is an artificially created human being, who treasures various superhuman abilities like enhanced speed, strength, and durability. He also excels at controlling and manipulating energy. Plus, the GOTG Disney+ special will serve as the basis of the upcoming Guardians sequel. Furthermore, Gunn has clarified that the misfits will find themselves on their most emotional adventure in the film. And all these plot points need an extended runtime to get explored in the best way possible.
James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, and many more talents. It will hit theatres worldwide on May 5. Stay tuned for more updates.
