The new Disney+Hotstar film is getting widespread appreciation from the audience. Yes, it has Manoj Bajpayee and is a decent film but what people are loving the most is interesting to note.
Bollywood used to make family films a few years back and they are easily one of the most celebrated films ever. Hum Saath Saath Hain, Nadiya Ke Paar, Vivah, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham and so many more have a large cult following.
But something happened and all of it suddenly stopped. As a consequence, families no longer bought tickets in bulk and the effect was very visible in the ticket sales too. Now, Gulmohar if it was released in theaters then might have suffered.
But, since the makers took a good step, Gulmohar seems to be the first rain in the drought-stricken genre of good family films.
Yes, some people are trolling the inclusion of LGBT elements in the film, but they are too insignificant in front of so much love that the film is getting.
The after effects of Gulmohar are also going to be interesting. Soon there will be the Prime Video series “Happy Family Conditions Apply”. Although it doesn’t look like a prospectus, Gulmohar is a good example of how family films can be in 2023.
We might get other family films in the future that follow in the same footsteps. Will they deliver the same impact? Let’s wait and see.
